Trains make a memorable impression on Alistair. At this afternoon's Christmas Eve service at church, he was craning his neck, to try and see if baby Jesus was in the manger. Last year Guy used a train to deliver baby Jesus to the creche, and Alistair was hoping that it would be the same this year. But baby Jesus was in his manger, and there was no train track in sight. Instead, Guy talked about something that happened "A long time ago," and then the organ played the Star Wars theme. Alistair slapped his forehead with a smile. The kids gathered around the alter for the homily (I at one point had three children climbing on me at once and one of them I had never met before), which was about light and dark, like with the Force. Guy brought out a large Lego Imperial Star Destroyer as a prop (a challenge he overcame with the help of others). It might not be as cool as a train, but it still made an impression on Alistair.
After the homily the children all stood in a circle, held their lit Christingle and sang Away in a Manger. It is the most wonderful moment of Christmas Eve.
After dinner, cookies and mince pies, it was time to track Santa. He was busy in Argentina delivering presents.
