Alistair came off the bus talking excitedly about a gingerbread man, his brown eyes open wide as he retold the "real" story. On the way home he asked me to retell the story, prompting me "Then next?" to make sure I didn't miss out any part. From what I understand, they made gingerbread men and baked them in the cafeteria kitchen. Mrs. Newlove put magic pudding in two of the gingerbread men, and while they were baking, they escaped. They made a mess in the cafeteria, knocking over chairs. The students went all over school looking for the gingerbread man, but he ran very fast. (Alistair demonstrated how fast he ran.) When they were on the bus, they saw the gingerbread man running. He went on talking about traps they needed to set for the gingerbread man. When we got home, Alistair told me the story again (although it varied slightly), and he made plans for the traps.
He talked about the gingerbread man all evening. When Colin was helping him get ready for bed, he accidentally knocked his ring on the window, and Alistair worriedly asked what that noise was. When I went into give him a cuddle, he hugged me very tight and confessed that he was scared that the gingerbread man was out there and was going to come in the house. I had to break the news to him that gingerbread men don't really come alive, but that it is sometimes fun to make believe stories like that. Still, he had Colin sit with him until he was asleep.
