To continue with the mining theme, today we took a trip to Ruggles Mine. From the parking lot, you have a great view of Mount Cardigan. In 1803, Sam Ruggles discovered mica on his farm, and the mine floor still sparkles with pieces of mica. By the end of the day, we glittered with mica dust too.
We brought some buckets and rented some hammers to dig in the mine. (The whole time I could hear the Seven Dwarfs singing in my head ,"We dig dig dig dig, ....In a mine, in a mine....Where a million diamonds shine!" We filled our buckets with small books of mica, some large quartz rocks, feldspar, mica schist, and other "pretty rocks". The kids loved digging in the dirt and rocks and exploring the caves and tunnels.
